Comment from Jason Lipscomb via Facebook:

Very nice insight. I think it does fail to realize that the largest growing demographic of Facebook users is those over 30. Facebook may be old hat to the younger generation, but it is a great communication tool for older people. Those are the people who we are trying to reach. Those are also the people who will become a fan of their dentist and not a night club. I posted this article the other day. It is a study of how women (who make the majority of dental decisions in households) interact with brands on Facebook. http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=131386

The implementation of the new open graph system will take Facebook to new levels beyond just getting fans. It will bring the rest of the web into Facebook and create an atmosphere mixing search and social media. The use of FBML will allow users to control the Facebook content in all new ways and interact with users at different levels.

Sure Facebook and Twitter are not the place for conventional advertising, but they are also not a sit and wait type of interface. I have had great success with Twitter just interacting with the right type of users and issuing the right type of content. I was actually on TV for the second time in 3 months because of one tweet. I am able to build relationships with businesses around my office and let them know what we are up to. Twitter is not only communicating with users one on one, it is getting others to spread your message for you.

I personally don't like yelp. It may be popular right now, but there are many other options that are much more useful. Yelp filters its reviews and often times will give strength to negative reviews while hiding positive ones. It is not syndicated very well due to its competition with Google. This mitigates its citation ability for local profile searches.
